How do I know if I need counseling? Several guiding factors can include a recent crisis, a lower level of functioning than desired, problems that are causing excessive distress, a lack of success in goals and relationships, feelings of being sad or overwhelmed, low motivation, excessive anger, and close associations having suggested counseling.
What are the qualities of a good therapist? Research suggests a warm therapeutic alliance, empathy for the client, and experience that brings insight into the causes and solutions to various problems.
What are the qualities of a successful counseling client? Research suggests a willingness to face problems, teachability, and a supportive outside network.
Does counseling really work? Yes!...based on a number of studies and my own extensive experience. Individuals, couples, and families can make specific changes that resolve issues, increase functioning, and allow them to enjoy life more and be happier.
What is the first step? How does counseling proceed? First, call the Cornerstone Counseling office to make an appointment. I prefer scheduling two back-to-back sessions initially. This gives me plenty of time to understand the person’s unique situation, make some assessment, and begin resolving the issues brought forth. I can almost always get an individual in for an appointment within a day or two, and I have some evening availability. After that initial session, counseling usually proceeds with weekly appointments.
How long does counseling take? Every case is different. It depends on the willingness of the client to work and make changes, and the history and magnitude of the issues. Within a couple of sessions improvement should be evident.
When is counseling completed? Counseling can be concluded at any point for any reason. But usually counseling has an endpoint when therapeutic goals are achieved and the individual’s life improves based on regular evaluation by client and therapist.
